Team leaders

Every workday is run by a volunteer

Every Immanuel Volunteers workday is run by a volunteer rather than by paid staff. Team leaders handle the welcome, the task list, the attendance sheet, and the thank-yous. The training is free, and the path from a first workday to running one is four steps.

How you get there

  1. Volunteer three times. We want leaders who know what a good workday feels like from the volunteer's side, so three events is the prerequisite.
  2. Have a conversation. We sit down together, talk about what kind of events suit you, and walk through what team leaders do before, during, and after a workday.
  3. Train for two hours. One evening covers opening the day, pairing people with tasks, keeping the site safe, and handling the things that go wrong.
  4. Shadow, then lead. You co-lead one workday alongside an experienced leader, and after that the clipboard is yours with us a text away.

Getting started

Text LEAD and your name to (205) 538-1061. If you have already volunteered with us three times, say so and we will set up the conversation. If you have not started yet, your first workday is step one and you can sign up here.

What the role gives you

Team leaders get project-management practice on a real deadline, a crew of people who turn into friends, and the experience of running a room. The work also ends with handing something finished to a neighbor who needed it.
